White (Ryker)

Soundtrack

I was honestly pleased to find that there was still ice-cream left when I got up. Of course, I had left it out on the counter; so it was nothing more than a white foamy mess - but it was good enough.
I glanced around the messy kitchen looking for a spoon; no luck, even the ladle was dirty. I shrugged and brought the tub up to my lips…bottoms up.

After chugging back the remnants of last nights supper, I dragged my feet into the living room. Looks like Grey and Pete checked out early, I sighed as I opened the balcony door and clambered out onto the pieces of broken wood and metal. “What’s for breakfast?” I shouted down, laughing as Grey and Pete split something out of a Styrofoam container.

“Egg McMuffin! You want some?”

“No thanks guys, already ate.” I waved goodbye and teetered my way back inside.
A quick look around the apartment showed one room-mate in, and one out. Lola was passed out on her bed, a burly looking guy sleeping beside her.
Zak’s room was empty. He was probably at work… but I couldn’t remember what day it was; therefore, I didn’t know for sure.
The thought gave me the willies regardless, yuck to a job and yuck to being told when you had to work!

I was an artiest - kind of. I made jewellery, which I thought counted as such. It was fun though. Lots of people around town knew me and sold my stuff in their stores. I didn’t make a lot, but I got by… plus it was a ’create when you’re creative’ kind of job, that allowed me superfluous amounts of free time.
Speaking of free time… what to do today?

I walked back down the hallway towards my room. I threw myself into the door in an attempt to get it to open; the pile of clothing behind it, fighting against me to keep it shut. I let out a huff, and looked down at what I was wearing. Sure the shirt was dirty but… I could still wear it. Oh shit! Giant hole? How did I not see that? I pulled the shirt off my head and chucked it on floor. I’ll deal with you later.

I backed up into Lola’s room and ran full tilt at my door; throwing myself into it once again; this time it opened. I did a little victory dance around the piles of shit on the floor in triumph, before searching for something to wear. How is everything I own dirty?
I sighed and glanced around my room; catching sight of a summer dress in my closet.
It was cold out… really cold; but oh well. I pulled of the rest of my PJ bottoms before pulling the dress over my head. Panties…? I took one more look around my room; with none in plain sight I shrugged, was it really that important?
I mean, besides… I’m wearing white!

White! The wonderful colour of virgins and all-things-holy. Of wedding dresses, purity and bird piss…
Do birds pee? Yes… that’s what the white stuff is… totally. Hmmm white stuff… I wonder if we have any Oreos…

After deducting that we had no Oreos, I figured I needed to head to the store. Of course, once I was outside I wandered; I liked to wander, you always ended up somewhere fun.
I walked by Tabitha’s Booth a local ’Chicago’s Own’ store; one of the many that sold my crap. Should see what’s left. I smiled as I walked across the street - almost getting hit by a giant black tank on the way. That’s probably so bad for the environment…

I pushed the door open to the store and Tabitha flipped out. “OH MY GOD! Ryker! Where have you been? I haven’t seen you in a month!”

Has it really been that long…? “Wow… I didn’t realize. Anything left?” I asked as I headed up towards the counter; where she kept the things I made.

“Nope… been out for almost a week! I tried to call but it said the phone was disconnected.” I nodded, forgot about that…

“So what do you need? Anything in particular?”

“Well… I had a man interested in getting some more of those flower things you make… and there was another guy in here, looking for a bracelet… actually that’s him there.”

I turned around to see a man approaching the counter. He was a tall guy, with shaggy brown hair; I love men with long hair… I sighed as he came to stand beside me. “She’s finally here!” Tabitha said, pointing in my direction.

“Oh great!” He smiled and extended a hand to me. “Patrick.” I smiled and shook it.

“So… you’re looking for a bracelet?”

He flashed me another million dollar grin, “Yah! It’s my girlfriend’s birthday next month and she has a few rings that you made… I was hoping that you could maybe do a bracelet or something? Just something a bit different?”

“For sure… what kind of stuff does she like… colors… shapes, designs?”

“She likes butterflies… colors… I don’t know.” I nodded to myself, hoping I’d be able to remember that.

“Shouldn’t be too bad.” I said finally, “give me a couple days?”

He clapped his hands in front of himself once. “Awesome! Thanks so much…?”

“Ryker! Her name’s Ryker.” Tabitha answered his unasked question.

“Alright, well… thank you Ryker. I’ll see you in a couple days.” He gave me another grin before heading back out of the shop.

Tabitha grinned at me from across the counter. “He was cute!”

“He was also very taken!” I smiled back at her, before heading towards the door. “I’ll drop off some more stuff later!” She nodded in response and waved goodbye.
Then I was off again.

I liked to think that if I ever had money; I’d be an adventurer, or a traveller. Seeing the world, touching down a street that had never felt my presence before.
It wasn’t like I didn’t know all about being carefree, I had a very happy spirit; and I had a fun life.
There was just something so exhilarating about the unknown, the distant, the unseen.

I smiled to myself as I opened the door to my apartment. Lola was finally awake, curled up on the couch watching TV with the guy from her bed. “Hey girlie!” She said in a sing-song voice as I plopped down beside her. “How was your night?”

“Good! Camping was fun, and I met some guy… he drove me home.”

“Drove you home? Where’s your car?”

I crinkled my nose as I thought back, I’d forgotten that I’d broke down. “Still on the side of the road, I guess.” She started to laugh at me, shaking her head.

“Only you, Ryker.”

"Gonna introduce me to your friend?" The guy asked, giving me a mischievous grin.

"Of course! This is the wonderful Ryker Willowfox, and Ryker this idiot is Adam Burish." I nodded at him as he continued to stare at me.

After watching the Nightmare Before Christmas with Lola and Adam, I headed into my room to start on the butterfly bracelet.
I pulled my trunk out from under my bed and shifted through it. Perfect! I smiled as I pulled out a glass butterfly. It was clear, but I figured it would work well enough; there was a mass of white beads at the bottom of the case. I pulled out some tweezers and wire and got to work; stingy the beads together in an intricate pattern as I began to wrap the wire around the butterfly.
This will look nice… I thought as I continued my work; white is such a beautiful colour.
White! Shit! I forgot to get Oreos...

  1. First off, I really liked that song!

Oh, I love Ryker and her crazy ADHD. (Now I want Oreos. Thanks!) I love that she's a free spirit. She's so much fun, like she's one of my friends.

The duality between the posts makes this so interesting. I can't wait to see what else you come up with!

  2. mmmm... Oreos...

The song fit so well, it complimented the chapter perfectly.

Ryker is probably my favourite written character ever right now... I feel like her at times, completely ADD, with an attention span of a goldfish! (3 seconds... woot woot)

Haha, Mr. Serious has to be one of my favs right now, Zigh.

Awesome chapter, can't wait for the next one.
